The top ten Maltese companies by market capitalisation in 2024 included Bank of Valletta, with $1.03 market capital; Malta International Airport with $0.87 billion and HSBC with $0.54 billion.

Other companies on this list operate in sectors such as property, banking, hospitality, technology and insurance. Emerging industries in Malta include online payments, online betting, gaming and cryptocurrencies.

Cruise ships companies are also recluting so if you want to take remote working to the next level there are ship-based jobs being advertised in the Maltese capital Valletta, for example.

The top three companies by sales turnover in Malta are Alkagesta, specialising in petroleum products, with € 2.02 billion, King.com, specialising in computer programming, with € 1.4 billion and HC Trading Malta, specialising in cement, with € 1.3 billion.

The largest employer is the Government of Malta with 45,000 employees.

The national newspaper Times of Malta called remote working the new norm and flexibility is now expected by job candidates and employees.

Languages Spoken in Malta

Malta has two official languages: Maltese and English. Many Maltese people can also speak Italian, which was one of the country’s official languages until 1934. Arabic is also spoken.

The Maltese language has Semitic and Afroasiatic roots and shares many linguistic elements of Arabic but also of Italian and the Sicilian dialect.

What stands out about the Maltese language is that, even though it is mostly based on Arabic, it is written in the Latin alphabet.

About 450,000 people speak Maltese in the island of Malta out of a total population of 500,000. Because Malta is a member of the European Union, Maltese is one of the EU’s official languages. Maltese is spoken in schools, courts, public institutions and the media.

About 400,000 people in Malta speak English as a second language, which means about 90% of the population speaks English as a second language and 10% as their first language. English is spoken in schools and can be found in most media and in communications with the general public.

Malta was occupied by British forces until 1979. It adopted the euro as its currency in 2008.
