        Languages Spoken in France

          The majority of the population of France (more than 87%) speaks French, which is a Gallo-Romance language, however there are many regional dialects being spoken in various parts of the country, including Basque, Catalan, Breton, Corsican and more. There are also French territories overseas where a myriad of local languages are spoken (more than 80 different languages). These territories are located in South America (for example, French Guiana), the Caribbean (for example the French West Indies), in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Indian Ocean.

          In terms of foreign languages, about 40% of the people speak English as a second language, and to a lesser extent Spanish (13%) and German (6%). An even smaller percentage of people speak Portuguese, sometimes as their first language.
