According to Euronews and Bloomberg, the hotspots that attract digital nomads in Europe are changing.

A study by Global Citizen Solutions found that some European countries have more of a pull than others based on a number of factors. It identified 10 European cities in particular, which are:

• Lisbon in Portugal
• Sao Miguel in the Azores, Portugal
• Valletta in Malta
• Zurich in Switzerland
• Palma in Mallorca, Spain
• Glasgow in Scotland, UK
• Belfast in Northern Ireland, UK
• Florence in Italy
• Amsterdam in The Netherlands
• London in the UK.

The list was based on infrastructure, particularly access to high speed wifi, available communities of fellow international workers, cultural activities including art galleries and tailored co-working spaces for remote workers.

Sweden for example is proving to have become increasingly popular among digital nomads and remote workers. Alongside Sweden, The Netherlands, Norway and Estonia have a lot to offer, particularly in terms of infrastructure. Then there are countries like Hungary, Latvia and Czechia that are more competitive because they offer a lower cost of living but without compromising on the quality of work opportunities.

Sweden

Surveys are finding the Swedish cities of Malmö and Stockholm to be particularly suited for digital nomads (as long as they don’t expect year-long sunny and warm weather).

These two cities are geared up to support innovation and many types of tech jobs are available there. They also have a high quality of life.

Stockholm is where the Spotify headquarters are, as the company was founded there back in 2006.

The Netherlands

All the major cities in The Netherlands have great potential for digital nomads: Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam all offer a high quality of life and comparatively lower costs of living.

The tech industry is thriving in The Netherlands with many start ups and a clear focus on innovation.

Germany

Hamburg, Berlin and Munich have been identified as great places to work in, benefiting from a good quality of life.

The tech industry is strong in Germany as well as life sciences.

Finland

Finland’s national airline Finnair highlighted a few Finnish cities that are ideal for the digital nomad lifestyle.

Beyond the obvious choice of Helsinki, other cities like Porvoo, Tammisaari and Turku offer low accommodation costs and spaces that are designed to aid productivity.

While the cost of accommodation is rising in many European countries, there are still areas within Europe that are off the beaten track and that can offer competitive rates. Some countries like Spain have even introduced incentives such as grants to attract digital nomads to rural, less populated regions (see previous article about Extremadura in Spain).
